Dear School Leaders,

As we begin a new school year, we also begin a milestone year for the Canadian Association of Principals. 2026–2027 marks the 50th anniversary of CAP—five decades of bringing school leaders together in support of Canadian public education. From its beginnings in 1977 to the national organization we are today, CAP has grown alongside the changing landscape of education, while remaining grounded in a fundamental belief: strong schools need strong school leaders, and strong school leaders are strengthened when they have a collective voice.

Over the past fifty years, the work of principals and vice-principals has evolved significantly. Our schools are more diverse, our communities are changing, and the challenges facing educators have become increasingly complex. Yet our purpose remains remarkably consistent: to create the conditions in which students can learn, teachers can thrive, and communities can have confidence in their public schools. CAP has been—and must continue to be—a place where school leaders can share that work, learn from one another, and advocate for the profession and for the students we serve.

It is an honour to serve as your President during this important chapter in CAP’s history. I am writing to you from Treaty 8 Territory—the traditional lands of Chief Drygeese—in present-day Yellowknife. As we look back with pride at the leaders and accomplishments that have shaped CAP over the past fifty years, we must also look forward. The future will require us to strengthen our connections across Canada, elevate the voices of school leaders, and ensure that the role of the principal remains central to conversations about the future of public education.

Our work this year will continue to be guided by Communication, Advocacy, and Presence. We have an opportunity to build an even stronger national network of school leaders—one where ideas and experiences are shared across provinces and territories, where the realities facing schools are heard at decision-making tables, and where principals and vice-principals know they are part of something larger than their individual schools or jurisdictions.

I warmly invite you to join us at CAP’s annual conference in Moncton, New Brunswick, April 27–30, 2027, as we celebrate this remarkable 50-year milestone. This will be a particularly special gathering as we welcome former CAP Presidents and honour the leadership and dedication of those who have helped shape our Association. More importantly, it will be an opportunity to look ahead together and consider what CAP can become over the next fifty years.
